In view of the rather large difference in the cost of cars in Turkey and abroad, many foreigners, when moving to the Republic, ask themselves the question, is it possible to bring a car from their country? - Yes, you can, but with some conditions:

In the Republic of Turkey, subject to certain rules of the Legislation, you can bring a car registered in another country for a period not exceeding 2 years.

In order to import a car with foreign license plates to Turkey and drive it for 2 years, you need to comply with 2 (!) Main requirements of the law:

Be absent from Turkey for at least 185 days in the last 365 days (calendar year) prior to the date of entry into the country. What does it mean? For example, you are entering Turkey by car on 04/10/2021. From this date at the border 365 days ago (10/04/2020) are counted, and in the interval between the dates 10/04/2020 - 10/04/2021, how many days you were outside Turkey, if more than 185 days, everything is fine, you can import a car. If less - it is impossible.

Have a residence permit, work visa or citizenship of the country in which the car is registered! Your citizenship for importing a car does not matter!

- That is, if you have Turkish citizenship, you have been absent for 185 days in the country, you have documents (residence permit, work visa or passport) of the country in which the imported car is registered - you have the right to import it for a period not exceeding two years.

-If you are a foreigner who does not have any Turkish documents (residence permit, work visa), and you have been absent from Turkey for 185 days in the last year, at the border you will be given a car stay of no more than 90 days. During this period, if you receive a Turkish residence permit or a work visa, you can extend the period of stay of the car until the end of the validity of the permit to stay in Turkey, but not more than 2 years in total. To renew, you will need to contact the nearest customs office in your province.

-If you are a foreigner who has a Turkish residence permit or a work visa, and you have been absent from Turkey for more than 185 days in the last year, you can import a foreign car, at the border they will set the period of stay of the car until the expiration of your residence permit in Turkey. If it ends earlier than two years, after receiving a new document, you can extend the period of stay of the car, but in total - no more than two years.

-If the car belongs to a pensioner and he / she became a pensioner before the date of import of the car to Turkey, and this pensioner is not Turkish (retired abroad) - the car can be imported for a period of no more than 2 years WITHOUT having to be absent from Turkey for 185 days in the last year ... Upon entry, you will need to provide documents for a car, insurance, a person's passport, and a pension certificate (or a certificate of an assigned pension not older than 3 months), with a translation into Turkish, performed by a translator from a jury at the Turkish consulate. The translation must be done in the country of registration of the car and certified by the Turkish consulate / embassy, pension documents must be from the same place (from the country of registration of the car).
